Contact currently has seven geothermal power stations in the country – all based in Taupō, which will increase to eight at the end of 2027 when a new station at Te Mihi will become operational. Commissioned in November 1958, Wairākei power plant, situated on the Wairākei geothermal system in Taupō, was one of the first geothermal plants of its kind in the world, and is an iconic symbol of New Zealand's geothermal electricity generation.

Mercury

Mercury is an electricity generator and retailer; its generation assets produce electricity from 100% renewable sources: hydro, geothermal and wind. It is New Zealand’s largest electricity retailer by customer market share, and we also sell gas, broadband and mobile services to residential and small to medium-sized
business customers.
Our commercial sales team service industrial and wholesale market customers offering electricity. Mercury’s geothermal generation has been developed over the last two decades in partnership with Māori and provides enough renewable electricity 24/7 to supply about 375,000 New Zealand homes.
In March 2026, Mercury completed a two-year project to expand its Ngā Tamariki Geothermal Power Station by adding a fifth generating unit. This increased the station’s capacity by 46MW, bringing average annual electricity generation to 1120 GWh - enough to power about 158,000 homes.

Transpower

Transpower owns and operates the high-voltage national electricity transmission network. We provide the infrastructure and market systems that connects electricity generators to major electricity users and distribution networks that deliver electricity to homes and businesses around the country. In 2025 Transpower launched Te Kanapu. Te Kanapu is a strategic discussion across the electricity sector and key stakeholders to inform actionable, least-regrets investments for a future transmission grid that is reliable, resilient, and affordable well into the 2050’s and beyond.
