Quarterly Economic Monitor: March 2026

The Taupō economy is showing strong signs of economic recovery. Infometrics provisionally estimates GDP to have grown 2.8%pa in the March 2026 quarter compared with the same quarter last year. Over the year to March 2026 growth measured 1.3%, as growth was weak in earlier quarters. The national economy grew 0.4% over the year.


An active housing market was a major contributor to the economic recovery with the rental, hiring and real estate services growing 6.3% over the year to March 2026. The number of houses sold was up 19% over the year to March 2026, with the average house value reaching $727,000 in the March 2026 quarter, a touch higher than a year earlier. Residential rents also continued to rise, against the national trend of declining rents. Rental affordability in Taupō has consequently deteriorated and is considerably less affordable than the national average. In Taupō the average rent amounted to 24.4% of the average household income over the year to March 2026, while the national average sat at 19.8%


The tourism sector has received a boost from international tourists. While total guest nights were up 1.3% over the year to March 2026, the number of international guest nights rose 2.6%. As international guests tend to spend more money, total tourism expenditure in Taupō was up a healthy 3.8%. However, the upward bump might be short lived due to the global disruption from the Iran War which might bring fewer international guests to our shores and curtail domestic travel due to higher fuel prices.


The Taupō labour market is still weak but there are signs of improvement. Employment of Taupō residents declined 0.5%pa in the March 2026 quarter compared to the same quarter last year which was the lowest decline since June 2024. Employment declined 1.5% over the full year to March 2026, as the decline was steeper in earlier quarters. Job losses were deepest in construction, professional services, and retail trade. The unemployment rate was sitting at 4.5% over the year to March 2026, well below the national average of 5.3%.


Many of the social indicators we track have been improving. The school attendance rate in Taupō reached 50.5% over the year to December 2026, up from 48.5% a year earlier, but well short of the national average of 58%. The crime rate has continued its downward trend reaching 397 criminal proceedings per 10,000 residents over the year to March 2026, from 457 a year earlier. On the negative side there was a slight uptick in annual gaming machine profits in the December 2025 quarter compared to the previous quarter, but they were down on the same quarter in 2024.



Gross Domestic Product

GDP in Taupo District was provisionally up 0.4% for the year to December 2025, compared to a year earlier. Growth was the same as in New Zealand (0.4%). Provisional GDP was $3,395 million in Taupo District for the year to December 2025 (2025 prices).


Business Counts

The number of business units in Taupo District was up 1.4% for the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. Growth was higher than in New Zealand (1.2%).

The number of business units in Taupo District reached an annual average of 5,815 in the year to March 2026, up from 5,732 in the previous 12 months.


Consumer Spending

Electronic card consumer spending in Taupo District as measured by Marketview, decreased by 0.9% over the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. This compares with a decrease of 0.3% in New Zealand.


Tourism Expenditure

Total tourism expenditure in Taupo District increased by 3.8% in the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. This compares with an increase of 11.5% in New Zealand.

Total tourism expenditure was approximately $881.5 million in Taupo District during the year to March 2026, which was up from $849.3 million a year ago.


Guest Nights

Total guest nights in Taupo District increased by 1.3% in the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. This compares with an increase of 4.2% in New Zealand. Visitors stayed a total of 1,412,900 nights in Taupo District during the year to March 2026, which was up from 1,395,300 a year ago.


Non-residential Consents

Non-residential building consents to the value of $77.4 million were issued in Taupo District during the year to March 2026. This compares with the ten year annual average of $54.4 million. The value of consents in Taupo District decreased by 15.4% over the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. In comparison, the value of consents increased by 1.2% in New Zealand over the same period.


Labour Market Indicators

  • Employment for residents living in Taupo District was down 1.5% for the year to March 2026, compared to a year earlier. The decline was greater than in New Zealand (0.8%). An average of 17,612 people living in Taupo District were employed in the year to March 2026.

  • Jobseeker Support recipients in Taupo District in the year to March 2026 increased by 1.8% compared to a year earlier. Growth was lower than in New Zealand (5.8%). An average of 1,658 people were receiving a Jobseeker Support benefit in Taupo District in the 12 months ending March 2026. This compares with the ten year annual average of 1,261.

  • The annual average unemployment rate in Taupo District was 4.5% in the year to March 2026, the same as in the previous 12 months. In the year to March 2026, the annual average unemployment rate in Taupo District was lower than in New Zealand (5.3%).

  • The annual average NEET rate in Taupo District was 13.8% in the year to March 2026, up from 13.6% in the previous 12 months. In the year to March 2026, the annual average NEET rate in Taupo District was higher than in New Zealand (13.6%).
