Whakarewarewa: The Living Maori Village
Tanya is Manahautū General Manager for Whakarewarewa – The Living Māori Village, one of Aotearoa’s largest geothermal tourism businesses, based at Te Whakarewarewa in Rotorua. Her role encompasses general management for the tourism business, visitor experience, heritage, environment, assets and site management, café, catering and retail, alongside CEO duties for Whakarewarewa Village Charitable Trust. Both the trust and tourism business work to further mātauranga Māori through a variety of collaborations, education, environmental programmes and onsite research, and by sharing the unique taiao (environment) through pūrākau (knowledge-sharing), pakiwaitara (story-telling) and kōrero (discussion). They are also active in engagement with advocacy, statutory and local government planning through submissions, such as on plan changes, the New Zealand Geothermal Strategy and WAI2358 the Waitangi Tribunal’s National Freshwater and Geothermal Resources claim.
