Mike Lindsay is a professional magician

From the age of 16 he’s been entertaining kiwis with his special blend of magic and humour. While building up his business in Auckland, Mike had his heart set on moving to Taupō.

“As a child I spent family holidays exploring Taupō and the Bay of Plenty region”

“It’s such an awesome area. Everything is right at your doorstep and the pace of life is just so much better.”

After working to build a strong client base Mike knew the time was right to relocate south. “When I first started my business all my clients were in Auckland. So I made a conscious decision to grow my regional contacts through a travelling show. In the end it made the move really simple.”

Mike now spreads his time between Auckland and Taupō, and he’s working on building up a base of local customers. “Making connections has been easy – people have been really friendly and helpful. There’s just so many opportunities. Last week I performed a show in a marae, and I’m looking to get involved in Taupō’s annual Winter Festival. I’ve also adapted the range of shows I’m offering to meet the needs of the local market.”

Taupō’s central location is great for Mike’s touring show. Places like Palmerston North and Whanganui are within easy driving distance, and he’s no longer battling the traffic on Auckland’s Southern Motorway. “I’m still really enjoying the novelty factor of living here. I love being a tourist in my own town and finding new adventures to experience. Kayaking, mountain biking, bush walks, it’s all here!”

His advice to others thinking of making the move? “Don’t find excuses – be confident in what you have to offer and build flexibility into your business location. Although I’m a performer, a lot of my time is spent on marketing, administration, and practicing for the next show. I can do all those things from my new home right here in Taupō.”
