Contact Energy

Contact Energy is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest energy generators and retailers and a proud member of the Taupō community. We are committed to leading the decarbonisation of New Zealand, and it is our vision to create and contribute to a better place to live; from the homes and communities we live in, to the land and resources that future generations can enjoy.

Contact currently has seven geothermal power stations in the country – all based in Taupō, which will increase to eight at the end of 2027 when a new station at Te Mihi will become operational. Commissioned in November 1958, Wairākei power plant, situated on the Wairākei geothermal system in Taupō, was one of the first geothermal plants of its kind in the world, and is an iconic symbol of New Zealand's geothermal electricity generation.

Geothermal energy plays a crucial role in New Zealand’s transition away from fossil fuels and it is an unsung hero. It’s also where Contact leads the world with technology and ingenuity.
