About the Event
This event will showcase innovations in mitigating and utilising Aotearoa’s geothermal carbon emissions, during which we will learn about practical examples of what is currently being done and what is planned for the future. While the world is transitioning away from fossil fuels in the energy sector, countries are accelerating renewable energy options. With New Zealand’s introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) last decade, geothermal plants have been included in the scheme due to their CO₂ emissions from these geothermal fields. Each year geothermal plant operators measure their CO₂ emissions and determine their surrendered carbon units annually. In 2021, with the backdrop of an increasing carbon unit price, an NZGA-coordinated geothermal CO₂ emissions working group was set up, with the purpose of knowledge-sharing to advance the progress of emissions reduction of the geothermal generation sector as a whole.
