About the Event
A guided tour through Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Village, the legacy and home of Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people. The residents of Whakarewarewa Village have lived alongside the geothermal taonga (treasure) for centuries, using it for bathing, cooking and heating. Learn about the history of geothermal tourism in Aotearoa New Zealand and take a tour through the rāhui (restricted area) and up to Geyser Lookout. A hāngī (traditionally prepared meal) cooked in the geothermal pools will be provided for lunch, followed by a cultural performance.
This tour is a unique opportunity to learn about the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand’s enduring relationship with geothermal, and to appreciate its cultural significance.
Ticket includes: Entry to Whakarewarewa: The Living Māori Village, welcome pōwhiri and history of the village by Whakarewarewa representatives, guided tour, lunch and cultural performance, and field trip transport (where needed). Regular retail price for this tour is over $120.
