Forestry is one of Taupō’s most significant land uses and export contributors. The district’s forests support jobs, exports, supply regional mills and underpin a growing interest in engineered timber, bioproducts and circular bioeconomy systems. As global markets shift toward low‑carbon materials and sustainable production, Taupō has an opportunity to move up the value chain.
The sector is stable but faces volatility in log prices, transport costs and international demand. Processing capacity is limited within the district, meaning most logs leave Taupō unprocessed. There are significant opportunities in engineered timber, bioenergy and bioplastics. Iwi and landowners are already exploring higher‑value uses of forestry land, including carbon farming, native regeneration and bio‑industrial development.
