Troy Campbell had been working hard to build his business in Auckland. He’d expanded his traffic control business in the construction and event sectors and he was starting to gather a strong list of clients. “Business was going well, but I was spending a lot of time away from my family sitting in traffic, being on-site each day and managing clients” says Troy. “Something needed to change.”
When Troy and his family arrived in Taupō for a holiday, Troy took a stroll along one of the local roads. “There was a property for sale nearby so I checked it out on Trade Me and found out the asking price. I was pleasantly surprised.” After working through their budget, the family found a holiday home to buy in Kinloch and started coming down most weekends.
It wasn’t long before the Campbells started to think about making a permanent move. “We were having so much fun exploring all the things Taupō has to offer.
”The traffic was non-existent and the lifestyle was great.”
After working through the budget the decision was made. “A week later the moving boxes arrived and we’d put our Auckland home on the market.”
Relocating Troy’s business turned out to be pretty straight forward. “I changed a number of things within the business so I didn’t need to be physically up in Auckland each day or at the depot. I have a great team up there who I trust. They are good with customers and support each other. They keep me in the loop with any problems that arise, which I can generally handle over the phone.” Troy has expanded his business offering locally and is getting to know key contacts in the region. “In places like Taupō it’s important to take the time to build relationships. That’s what we believe will deliver the long-term business growth.”
The Campbells are now living on a lifestyle block a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Taupō. “Spending quality time with my family is great – it sure beats sitting in traffic. We have a number of animals that we look after on the block and school and kindy are only a few minutes away from home. The balance is much better.”
