2023 Wrap up

We had a great turnout for NZ Geothermal Week 2023.  This was Amplify’s third year of running this showcase of the NZ geothermal industry, which has the Taupo Volcanic Zone at its heart.

This year, the program offered over 20 events concentrated over 5 days (24-29 July) wrapped around the NZ Geothermal Association’s Winter Seminar, with events for schools extending into Term 3. Over 2,550 tickets were taken up across 21 events.  A total of 12 companies hosted the various events, 45 speakers from 27 companies presented, and over 50 industry STEAM Ambassadors inspired students at .  It was a huge undertaking!

The industry’s role in New Zealand’s energy future were highlighted through a “Energy Transitions in Aotearoa - the role of Geothermal” theme.  The anchor event, New Zealand Geothermal Association's winter seminar attracted a record 240 delegates, with over 70 companies attending.  This desire to make a difference to New Zealand's energy future was strongly demonstrated by high attendance at the 'Geoheat for Horticulture and an industry Co2 workshop. Other events included industry field trips, industry workforce and Geothermal Cluster workshops, an industry leaders breakfast, several networking events and, the weeks finale event where Contact Energy opened the doors of the Te Mihi plant for our local community.

For the upcoming generations, we were proud to an deliver industry led STEAM outreach program into schools along with science competitions. For the very young, the Taupo District Library brought a geothermal flavour to their regular Toddler Time.  While most events were run in and around the Taupo district, the event week has extended into other geothermal districts, Rotorua and Kawerau, including STEAM Ambassador outreach into schools.

This enormous undertaking was made possible through the generous support of event week sponsors and partners.  Leading local companies Contact Energy, GNS Science and MB Century were again major event week sponsors, with Mercury, Mitchell Daysh, Cheal, Worley and Western Energy also coming on board.  The support of event partners NZ Geothermal Association, Women in Geothermal (WING) and Amplify’s fellow EDA, Bay of Connections in promoting and hosting events was also invaluable.
