2022 Wrap up
We had a great turnout for NZ Geothermal Week 2022, despite the cold & wet weather!
This was Amplify’s second year of running this showcase of the NZ geothermal industry, which has the Taupo Volcanic Zone at its heart.
This year, the program offered 23 events concentrated over 5 days (25-29 July) wrapped around the NZ Geothermal Association’s Winter Seminar, with some events for schools extending into Term 3 (currently underway). Over 1,200 people attended events held during the week, with another 1,400 students expected to get involved with ongoing education and career-related events. A total of 12 companies hosted the various events, 45 speakers from 27 companies presented, and 46 industry STEAM Ambassadors are scheduled to visit 22 schools. It was a huge undertaking!
The industry’s role in New Zealand’s energy future and focus on quadruple bottom line results were highlighted through a “Building a Sustainable Future” theme. This desire to make a difference was strongly demonstrated in the opening event, a showcase of Te Pae o Waimihia’s new eco-industrial park, He Ahi, which will offer up to 40 industrial sites. Other events included industry field trips to Tauhara and Nga Tamariki, a seminar on funding/investment available for businesses looking to build a sustainable future, an industry workforce workshop, a public seminar, technology showcases, numerous networking events, and a black-tie celebration of NZGA’s 30th Anniversary at The Hilton.
For the upcoming generations, the industry is currently delivering STEAM outreach into schools and science competitions and will be running a behind-the-scenes tour of major industrial sites later in the term. For the very young, the Taupo District Library brought a geothermal flavour to their regular Toddler Time. While most events were run in and around the Taupo district, the event week has extended into other geothermal districts, Rotorua and Kawerau, including a decarbonising industry seminar and STEAM Ambassador outreach into schools.
This enormous undertaking was made possible through the generous support of event week sponsors and partners. Leading local companies Contact Energy, GNS Science and MB Century were again major event week sponsors, with Mitchell Daysh, Solenis and Western Energy also coming on board. The support of event partners NZ Geothermal Association, Women in Geothermal (WING) and Amplify’s fellow EDA, Bay of Connections in promoting and hosting events was also invaluable.
